Challenge Details
The Challenge begins on 01-JAN-25 at 00:00 GMT and you'll be granted 60 days access to the Dynamic Languages app, our online library, and Discord. You'll receive daily emails that give you advice on what to do that day and coach you on your journey to language fluency. You'll spend around 20 minutes each day immersed in VR, or completing Side Quests without the headset in order to complete the Challenge.
After you complete Lesson 1, you'll complete a Side Quest (optional) to record a video of yourself and your initial reaction, sharing it on social media and Discord.
In the Discord community, you will support each other with regular posts and provide the community needed to stay motivated and make solid progress.
The secret to achieving language fluency is that it requires regularly interacting with the language, immersing yourself when possible, and enjoying the process so you want to keep learning! Most language apps and courses don't tell you that it takes a lot of time and effort over many years.
In this 60-Day Challenge, you'll take your first Japanese lessons, using additional videos and resources, and you will start a positive habit of learning. By the end of the 60-Day Challenge, you will be able to introduce yourself in Japanese and have the skills, habits, and tools you need to continue on your path to fluency.
Goal: Complete the "Introduce Yourself" VR Module by taking the first 9 Japanese lessons on the Dynamic Languages VR App (Meta Quest) and completing the non-VR Side Quests, which you'll receive via email. This will take around 15-20 minutes per day.
Skills Unlocked: Learn how to introduce yourself with your name, age, family, job, nationality, and other important information. This basic introduction is a great first step on your journey to language fluency. Soon you'll be ordering food in Tokyo, making new Japanese friends, and discovering a whole new culture.
Stretch Goal: Complete the "Food" VR Module by taking the next 7 Japanese lessons on the app and completing an additional Side Quest. Learn the skills to order in a restaurant, talk about food and drink you like/dislike, and understand the cost of things. This will take around 30 minutes each day on average.
You must do the following two things to be eligible for the prizes:
1) Complete the first 9 Japanese Lessons including the conversations and Trips to Japan within the 60-day Challenge (from 01-Jan-25 to 02-Mar-25).
2) Submit 2 videos showing your progress - one video after completing Lesson 1 and one video after completing Lesson 9.
These videos will get you outside of your comfort zone, which is a necessary skill to learn when speaking a new language. You'll also see the amazing progress you will have made in between the two videos!
Prize winners will be judged on their Japanese skills using their App lesson and Side Quest performance, the creativity and social media performance of their videos, as well as the quality of their posts in our Discord. Communication in Discord is not required but is recommended, as community is an important factor in successful language learning.
Full T&Cs can be found here: Competition Terms & Conditions
All participants who complete the challenge will be sent a collection of digital 8K3D photos of Mount Fuji so they can virtually visit Japan whenever they want.
The additional prizes are subscriptions to the Dynamic Languages app:
- β€ The Top Challenger will win a 12 month subscription to the app (value $250)
- β€ The Second Place Challenger will win a 6 month subscription to the app (value $150)
- β€ These two Challengers will ALSO win a 30-minute Language Coaching Session with a Japanese tutor
- β€ Some other successful Challengers will win 1-3 month subscriptions to the app (value $25-$75)
These prizes will help the winners continue on their journey to language fluency.
With each 100 Challengers, we'll increase the prize total so share the Challenge on your Socials and tag your Meta Quest friends.
Side Quests are activities outside of VR that should be completed as part of the Challenge. Some are small but they are all beneficial. They include, but are not limited to: making two short videos of yourself speaking Japanese (optional), using vocab-building apps, and watching Japanese language videos.
These Side Quests play a pivotal role in the full immersion of the course, as they provide a contact with Japanese while outside of VR. It's important to regularly interact with the language, immerse yourself when possible, and enjoy the process so you want to keep learning!
Some Side Quests involve recording a video of yourself and they are excellent practice, because they get you out of your comfort zone and speaking publicly, which will build your confidence.
However, we respect your right to privacy and we will accept Challenger videos where an avatar is used in place of a real person, or narration is added over the top of relevant background footage (e.g. App Screenrecord).
Challenger videos may be used in promotional materials by Dynamic Languages, unless a Challenger explicitly withdraws their consent before the video is used in promotional activities. You can withdraw this consent anytime before use by emailing [email protected]. Read our Privacy Policy for more information.
If you do not submit the videos, you will still be entitled to the 360 photo reward when you complete the course, but will not be eligible for any of the prizes.
Once the 60-Day Challenge finishes, successful Challengers will receive their collection of 360 3D photos within 7 working days. Prize winners will be notified within 14 working days. After the Challenge ends, your App Membership will expire unless you have enrolled into the next Challenge or paid for a monthly subscription.
A lot of Challengers will want to continue learning after this 60-Day Challenge and can join the next Challenge, which will start less than two weeks after the previous one finishes. You can even pay for all 5 Challenges now and receive a $100 discount.

No. You can't pause. The Challenge is very achievable in 60 Days, in fact we've had students complete the "Introduce Yourself" VR Module in just 15 days. So 60 Days at the beginning of the New Year is enough time.
Don't forget! The Stretch Goal of completing the second "Food" VR Module is on the table for any Challengers who can spend more than 20 minutes a day on their Japanese. Remember though, it isn't about rushing through, it's important to regularly interact with the language, immerse yourself when possible, and enjoy the process so you want to keep learning!
You can receive a refund if the Challenge has not started. Refunds will be processed within 5-10 working days. The Challenge starts at 00:00 GMT 01-JAN-25, after which no refunds are available.
You can also defer your enrollment for a later date in the same calendar year. To receive a refund or delay your enrollment, please send an email to [email protected] and we'll get back to you within 3 working days.
Each VR lesson is a 360 3D live-action video of real people speaking Japanese. You'll be completely immersed in a Japanese learning environment, using speech recognition to improve your pronunciation and progress through the interactions. Watch our App tutorial.
You'll sit alongside Katie, being taught by Anne and Yuka - two teachers with a combined 50+ years of experience. Anne Rajakumar has written the 10-part Yonde Kaite series, published by Insight Languages. With striking manga-style illustrations and a clear, vibrant layout, the Yonde Kaite series is the go-to Japanese-learning resource for Australian primary students and teachers.
Each lesson has a short video tutorial in English, outlining the main topics covered in that lesson. The 360 lessons are completely in Japanese to immerse you in the language. They start with a presentation, where new vocabulary is introduced and you repeat phrases or answer questions using speech recognition to progress.
The presentation is followed by a game, song, or roleplay for further Japanese practice. You then receive a cherry blossom petal to celebrate the completion of each classroom lesson.
After the classroom, you travel to Japan to have conversations with native speakers, using the language you have just learned. Practice what you've learned in realistic conversations with real people. Eye contact, body language, and facial expressions create memorable encounters.
After completing all of this you are rewarded with some beautiful scenes from around Japan with cultural commentary, and key Japanese vocabulary to add to your skillset. Each lesson takes less than an hour to complete.
Our VR Japanese Beginner Course is based on the Marugoto Syllabus, where using Japanese to communicate is the goal. Marugoto was designed by the Japan Foundation and it has free online materials that we link to in our library. There is no textbook but there are a lot of online materials.
The aim of our programme is for people to understand each other while actually communicating in Japanese. This is why we prioritise speaking and listening, with less focus given to reading and writing.
Our approach is to create new content, specifically for learning in VR. For this reason, we also give you links and recommendations for other great videos, podcasts, websites, apps, and resources that can support you on your journey to Japanese fluency outside of the headset.
